HOW MILLENNIALS ARE CHANGING THE CONCEPT OF “WATCHING TELEVISION”
by Emily Jones
Recent studies conducted on Millennials’ habits revealed that today’s young adults are watching television in a different way. Millennials are drifting away from traditional TV platforms and consuming TV content and video on streaming platforms. While Millennials are still watching a large amount of video content, they are doing it on non-traditional platforms such as their mobile devices. Rather than having to adhere to traditional linear television schedules, Millennials are choosing to be in command of what they what to view, when and how. Streaming services in fact provide a flexible and cost friendly way for TV shows and films to be consumed on any mobile device and provide a personalized platform for each user to enjoy on-demand content.
Streaming occurs when content is sent in a compressed form through the web and displayed by the viewer in real time. This removes the hassle of having to wait for content to download, whereas web users can enjoy a continuous stream of data in real time. Today viewers have many options, as there are quite a few streaming services available. One of the newest on the market is the Italian CHILI, which does not require users to subscribe and buy a membership, but offers pay-per-view options providing a cost-friendly and personalized experience for each user. On-demand streaming platforms like this present a series of advantages which are very much aligned with Millennials’ habits. In a technology driven world, Millennials are drawn to streaming platforms as they can be easily accessed all over the world, on any chosen device. Streaming platforms provide flexibility, as everything from brand new films, TV shows, the latest news and sports broadcasts can be viewed from the comfort of one’s very own home.
On-demand television is changing the way TV is consumed as it allows for users to choose when they want to watch something without having to adhere to a linear TV schedule and even binge-watch entire seasons all in one sitting, without having to wait as episodes are released week by week. Streaming platforms have also proven to be more cost friendly than cable TV and more cost efficient than paying to go to the cinema. The cost of streaming services ranges from free to low-fee, and many also offer free trials so that users can test the services before committing. With streaming platforms users know they are paying for an easily accessible platform where there will always be interesting and up to date content.
In a world where technological advancements are allowing for services to become faster and more efficient, Millennials are shifting the way they consume television. Today’s young adults are choosing to have TV right at their fingertips, selecting and watching content on-demand through a cost friendly and highly personalized experience.
